How to entertain kids at a wedding

Do you invite kids to a wedding?

Many people think about this when wedding planning. Kids do love a wedding but as a guest (depending on their age) you are less relaxed. But many families have lots of kids in so want to include them.

There are definitely arguments for and against. My thoughts on for:

  • It would be sad to have lovely photos of the day and none of the kids in it. They are part of the family.

  • They will love it and treasure the memories forever.

  • They will learn that there are wonderful parts in life for love and celebrations.

  • It sets an example of love and family to them.

My thoughts on against:

  • They can get grumpy and tired!

  • They cannot stay up as late.

  • I’m mostly for!

So they are coming, what to do with them?

Well from my wedding experiences, it would be ideal if little ones can be collected at some point in the evening so you can have a couple of hours of child free fun! But that isn’t always possible. Sometimes kids being there until late can mean some of your guests leave earlier than planned.

Bubble fun

I’ve yet to meet a kid who doesn’t love playing with bubbles! Giant bubbles could be a great option. Or just lots of packs of bubbles for them to blow and play with, ideally outside.

Paid for entertainment

Honestly I wish I had done this! My parents did it in the 90’s when they married (and already had lots of kids!) a magician or something to keep them focussed away from the adults, maybe ideal for a drinks reception or post dinner.

Crafting activities

Bring a whole box of tricks set up a table and let them have some fun!

Kids disco

This is easy and no extra cost. Before the party really gets started for the adults and they are enjoying the post food fullness and drinks let the kids hit the dance floor with all their favourite songs.

Cameras of their own

This was an absolute winner at our wedding! The kids had lots of fun taking photos of the wedding, it helped them to speak with strangers as they had the camera in hand and a purpose and made them feel like they had an official role or job on the day.

Lawn games

If you have the space lawn games are great fun. You don’t need a lawn specifically! Also the adults could have fun with this one. Make the games super simple and no reading required to keep those youngest able to play and know what to do.

Lego corner

Probably not ideal if you have a lot of crawling or toddling but if the kids are mostly 6-teens then this could be a winner. Helps those more introverted have somewhere quiet to go to and entertain themselves without a screen.

Creche

If you want to splash the cash, hire an event creche, I’ve no doubt the parents attending would love this one!

Soft play

You can now hire soft plays for parties so wouldn’t this be a winner at a wedding if you had mostly little ones?

Some other ideas:

  • Bouncy castle

  • Face glitter/tattoos

  • A movie space (if there is an extra room at the venue this could be fun, a local restaurant does this and the kids love it!)

  • A space to nap or relax with pillows and blankets.
